The need for real information
Yolngu desperately need access to health information in their own language and worldview. This information works from where most Yolngu are at, dealing with the contradiction and confusion they have around different diseases or illnesses.
Yolngu have a massive amount of deep, complex knowledge about the animals around them and the dangers in that world. Yet, when it comes to medical information, they are often given simplistic information and slogans in English, which they have trouble understanding. Unfortunately, this approach does not satisfy their intellectual requirement, so the information is considered rubbish and not complied with.
Yolngu and other Aboriginal people want factual information down to a deep biomedical level so they can see the real implications. And their language is exceptionally competent for delivery at this level. The resources below come from 40 years of linguistic research with our Yolng Balanda production team.
